Discover the screen printing printmaking technique on my screen printing courses. If you have done a little screen printing before use these printmaking workshops as an opportunity to refine your skills.

I run courses in various locations within easy reach of Leeds, Sheffield and Huddersfield and within an hour of Manchester.

The 12 hour courses are spread over 2 days so if you are travelling from further afield then why not make a long weekend of it and spend some of your time in the nearby beautiful Peak District.

All equipment is provided and all abilities are welcome on these 2 colour screen printing courses for 6 people.

Screen Printing Courses Description

Join me, illustrator and printmaker Lucy Gell, for an experimental 2 day screen print course where artwork will be generated solely through this analogue printmaking process.

This fun hands on approach to screen printing offers exciting results without the use of a computer.

We will use various types of mark marking and a range of materials. Over the  course of the 2 days you will explore textural and linear approaches to image making. You will then work to develop a two colour transparency / positive from which to print.

The workshop will support you through the process of exposing your analogue image onto silk screen (a photographic process using UV sensitive emulsion). You will translate your hand produced artwork into a stencil ready to print. Next you will be taught how to mix colour and use specialist equipment. You will then create a lovely bundle of two colour, A4 paper screen prints to take home at the end of workshop.

Itinerary For The Screen Printing Courses

  • Day 1 – The first day of the workshop will involve your image development and creating your two analogue positives. You will then learn how to prepare and coat your screens ready for exposing your image. You will then expose your images onto the screens. Today you will screen print a test example of marks and textures to see how you can use these in your own design.
  • Day 2 – On the second day you will choose and mix your two colours ready for printing. You will print your first colour and then the second to create your two colour screen prints. After the screen printing is completed, you will be shown how to clean the screens that have been used during the workshop.

What to Prepare

It would be advisable to have an image in mind before attending the workshop, however there will be an opportunity to develop your design during the first day.

Your Tutor Lucy Gell

My hand printed original prints and illustrations blend simple design, line and textures with an emphasis on character and personality. A lot of my early work focuses on acid plate etching. More recently, however, I have become completely obsessed with screen printing. I am now a member of the West Yorkshire Print Workshop where I do most of my own screen printing. I create all my artwork for screen printing by hand using tracing paper, black ink and pencils. The hands on approach to this kind of printmaking is what I love so much. I don’t want things to be perfect, I love the surprises you get with printmaking. As well as screen printing workshops I run regular lino printing workshops locally near my  home town of New Mills, Derbyshire and run multiple printmaking of art retreats in Europe.

Experience level

This course is suitable for beginners and anyone wanting to further their knowledge of this wonderful printmaking technique.

What’s Included On My Screen Printing Courses

What an absolutely fabulous two days with the most friendly and supportive tutor you can imagine. By the end of day two we were all screen printing magicians! Thoroughly enjoyed all the processes and using analogue techniques has been a game changer for me. Will definitely be doing a lot more of this type of printmaking in the future. Thank you Lucy !
